Walker And Fuimaono Open Netball Courts In Walgett

Words: Mark Barnaville

Over the weekend, Cody Walker and teammate Tyrell Fuimaono were far from the training grounds of Redfern Oval. The duo were visiting the remote community of Walgett in far Northern NSW to appear at the opening of the town’s new netball courts – a happy addition for the tiny population of two thousand.

The pair drove eight hours to appear in Walgett. To say the appearance of the pair ‘lit up’ the little town would not come close to describing the awe and excitement on young kids’ faces, described Walker.

“They had an opening for the new netball courts so me and Tyrell Fuimaono went out there and saw a lot of smiling faces and a lot of Rabbitohs supporters," said Walker.

For Cody, growing up in a small town holds a special significance, and the memories of Rugby League players visiting his remote community hold strong to this day.

“My manager, he’s from Walgett, so he asked me if I wanted to go out there and, yeah, I jumped at the opportunity.

“We like to get out in the community and we like putting smiles on kids faces. I grew up in a small community in Casino and I still remember when Rugby League players would come back to the town. You were like a sponge, you really took everything in and it really made a difference.”
